His middle name was Gavin.

Dorothy: John recalled a few incidents for Dorothy. In 1938 he told of skating on the Ohio river, how civil war soldiers ate raw dough in his mother’s kitchen in Missouri, how he had never worn overalls, jeans as they called them. He hauled supplies, salt and groceries from Nebraska City with horse and wagon.  This was when they first lived in Crete.

Obituary: Born in Albany, NY, moved with his parents to Iowa, where he grew to manhood. After marriage the couple migrated westward to Indianola and established their home near Red Willow.

Louise said: John G. and family came to Red Willow County in 1908 & bought a farm north of Red Willow.  His mother, Mary, moved with them and lived there until her death. Farm  was 7 miles from McCook, 2 miles from Red Willow. Later James farmed John's farm; it was south of Levi Burton, 3 mi. east of Indianola.

Louise said: Feb 1926 He was waiting for Jim and Louise when they arrived home after their wedding. He lived with them most of the time until his death in 1945.  He lived with them most of Betty Lou's growing up years. He always had a cache of candy the shape of a leaf, white satin, with black walnut filling and butterscotch drops.

                  COMES NOW, Harold O’Dea, a son of J. G. O’Dea, and alleges that the said J. G. O’Dea, his father, is 91 years of age, and the owner of certain personal property in cash in the amount unknown to petitioner, and the following described real estate to-wit:
That part of the Southeast Quarter of Section Nine, Township 3, North Range Twenty-seven, Red Willow County, Nebraska, which lies north of the Republican River, and South of the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad right-of-way, consisting of about 95 acres; that the said J. G. O’Dea is a resident of Red Willow County, Nebraska; that by reason of extreme old age, blindness and other consideration, he is mentally incompetent to have charge of his estate, or the management of his estate, and is wasting his estate, and if permitted to continue, will be reduced to want, and may become a county charge.
That the immediate family of the said J. G. O’Dea and the only persons interested in his estate are his children, whose names, ages and addresses are as follows:

          Now on this 17th day of June, 1944, this cause came on to be heard before Honorable L. H. Cheney, Acting County Judge of Red Willow County, Nebraska; the petitioner, Harold O’Dea, being present in person and represented by Frank B. Morrison, his attorney; the alleged incompetent J. G. O’Dea, present in person and represented by Wade Stevens, his attorney; and Mr. And Mrs. James W. O’Dea, present in person and represented by Donald E. Kelley, their attorney, this cause came on to be heard upon the petition of the said Harold O’Dea and the objections of the said J. G. O’Dea, and also of Mr. and Mrs. James W. O’Dea.
Evidence was introduced on behalf of the petitioner, and a continuance was taken until June 23, 1944 at nine o’clock A.M.
Thereafter, on June 23, 1944, the parties being present as aforesaid, the trial of this case was resumed and the taking of evidence continued during the day, and adjournment taken to nine o’clock A.M. June 24, 1944, when taking of evidence was concluded and the arguments of counsel heard, and the case was submitted to the court.
Upon consideration of the files and all of the evidence and the arguments of counsel, the court being fully advised in the premises, finds against the petitioner, and in favor of the objectors, and specifically finds that the said J. G. O’Dea is fully competent at this time to transact his business, and that a guardian should not be appointed.
IT IS THEREFORE CONSIDERED ORDERED AND ADJUDGED by the court that J. G. O’Dea is competent person, and that the petition for the appointment of a guardian for said J. G. O’Dea is hereby dismissed, and the costs of the proceeding are taxed to the petitioner, Harold O’Dea, in the amount of  $ 17.32__.

JOHN G. O'Dea, SON OF Andrew O'Dea and Anna McGraw and husband of Anna McGowen died January 22, 1945, age 91. He was buried January 24, 1945 in Saint Catharine Cemetery, Block 5, Lot 11, G. 2, Indianola, Nebraska.
He was born in Albany, New York on May 20, 1853. The officiating priest was Father H. Haukap. Note: The name of John G. O'Dea's mother differs in the two records. Also, in the earlier records there is no apostrophe.

Obituary - John G. O'Dea
John G. O'Dea , 91, a resident of Red Willow county since 1908 passed away January 22, at his home in McCook after an illness which had affected him for the past two months. His home is a farm near Red Willow.
Born in Albany, New York on May 20, 1853, he moved with his parents to Iowa, where he grew to manhood. Following his marriage to Anna McGowen the couple migrated westward to Indianola and established the home near Red Willow.
Eight sons and daughters survived, they are: George O'Dea, Exeter, Nebr.; Charles, McCook; James, Indianola; Harold, McCook; Mrs. Blanche Turner, Friend, Nebr.; Mrs. Irene Treadway, Kearney; Ellen O'Dea, McCook; and Mrs. Susan Colling, McCook.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning at the St. Catherine's church in Indianola with Msgr. H. S. Haukap officiating. Interment was in the Indianola cemetery, with Herrmann and Deffer in charge.

John G. O'Dea, a long time resident of Saline county, passed away at St. Catherine's Hospital in McCook, January 22nd, 1945, at the age of 91 years, 8 months and 2 days.
His wife, and two children, John and Mary, preceded him in death.
He leaves to mourn his passing eight children: George, Exeter; Charles, McCook; Harold, McCook; James, Indianola; Susie Colley, McCook; Irene Treadway, Kearney; Blanche Turner and Ellen O'Dea, Friend; 29 grand children and 10 great grand children.
At the time of his death he had 8 grandsons and 2 granddaughters in this war, serving our country.
He was buried from the Catholic church at Indianola, Wednesday, January 24th, Rev. Father Haukap officiating.

O'Dea, a long time resident of Saline county, passed away at St. Catherine's Hospital in McCook, January 22nd, 1946, at the age of 91 years, 8 months and 2 days. His wife, and two children, John and Mary, preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his passing eight children: George, Exeter; Charles, McCook; Harold, McCook; James, Indianola; Susie Colley, McCook; Irene Treadway, Kearney; Blanche Turner and Ellen O'Dea, Friend; 29 grand children and 10 great grand children. At the time of his death he had 8 grandsons and 2 granddaughters in this (World War 2) war, serving our country. He was buried from the Catholic church at Indianola, Wednesday, January 24th. Rev. O’Dea departed this life at McCook, Nebraska, on January 22, 1945, intestate; that immediately preceding his death he was a resident and inhabitant of Red Willow County, Nebraska, and was possessed of personal property of the value of about $550.00, and real estate of the value of about $4,000.00 to be administered.
The sole heirs at law of said deceased are the following named sons and daughters, all of whom are of legal age:
