1803 "He was born in a little stone house constructed by Johann in the 1700's. 11, 29 Dr. Jerry D. Colling has photos of house where he was born. The Bormann family & Grandpa Pütz (1904) lived there in 1983, The Colling-Stoffel house in Dasburg is also known as the Balthasar Spoden house. It stands on a little hill. Theodor Colling was probably born here, as his parents lived here. Egon Colling visited the Bormann family. This family bought the old Colling-Stoffel house at Dasburg, but it isn't a house now, it's a stable, pig shed, and room for utensils and apparatus. Bormanns are a nice family and Grandpa Alfred Pütz (ca 70 years old) was born in old house. His grandma bought the house when she was married, but he can not remember the date. We think it was ca. 1890" per Dr. Jerry Colling. 11

Helen Colling Ballou has this flyleaf from her grandfather Theodor's religious song book. The old traditional German longhand bears little resemblance to English. The upper part, through "1856" is delicately written in brown ink. The bottom part is apparently written by Theodor Colling, is in light lead pencil traced over heavily in ink. He wrote a letter 16 April 1861 to the Mayor in Neuerburg asking for emigration consent for himself age 57, his Wife age 54 and four minor sons, Wilhelm, and twin brother Johann age 19, Gregor age 13 and Wilhelm ll age 10.

Aug. 10,1861, Immigrated to America, Arrived in District of New York - Port of New York on Hamburg Bark Raleigh (Captain CW Heidrich) Aug 10, 1861 at age 57, destination was listed as Chicago, (from Hamburg with wife & 4 children.) They came 6 years after their older sons Henry and Nikolaus, who had come over in 1855. After arriving by ship in New York, the Collings all came to the Chicago area and settled around Warrenville and Winfield, except for Henry, who farmed several miles to the NW of Elburn. This area is now part of West Chicago.

1870 Census records has him listed as having a Warrenville PO address and as a woodcutter. 34

Information on German Settlement in Illinois.

1877 Sold property per Brother Bede Colling Stadler; we don't know the exact location. His name, however, was on the same census sheet as an Albert Jones, whose farm bordered the William Colling farm on the north. This makes one wonder if this William Colling farm was first owned by Theodor, as they came over on the same ship. 35

1985 More than 300 Colling family members gathered over the Memorial Day weekend in the Chief Motel (McCook, Nebraska) assembly room to celebrate the 130th anniversary of their ancestors' coming to America. Attending were many descendants (from 17 states) of five German Colling brothers who came to the US in the 1850's and 1860's.
Reunion of descendants was May 25, 1985, 2pm, at Fellowship Hall of the Catholic Church in Indianola. Sunday the group had a dinner in St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Indianola, served by the Altar Society. Leslie Colling, Austin, Minnesota, presided. He awarded the prize for the oldest descendant to Mrs. Matilda Colling Quigley of Indianola and the youngest to Jason Bryant of McCook, Nebraska.
Dr. Jerry D. Colling, Carlsbad, CA, gave a slide presentation of pictures of the Colling ancestors, the ancestral home in Dasburg, Bitburg, Germany, and the present day Collings still living in Germany. Theodor sold his property in 1877 per Brother Bede Colling Stradler - most of information of this time came from Brother Bede to Dr. Jerry D. Colling.
Conclusion: Before the establishment of the church at Winfield the Collings perhaps attended the parish at Naperville. After the establishment of the "German" parish in Winfield (1867), We would think that the Collings attended the Winfield church where they would feel more at home. Many of the parishioners came from the same area in Germany. It is perhaps at Winfield that Theodor and Elizabeth are buried (1879-1880), despite the lack of proof due to the records having been burned in the rectory fire of 1894 and/or in the church fire of 1906, for their records begin in 1892-94
