1851 Jerry Dee Colling visited the county clerk 7 miles north of Lahr in Neuerburg and asked to see his great grandfather's birth certificate. The man walked into a modern steel vault and brought out this yellowed, musty book and showed him Theodor's signature under younger Wilhelm's "Geburts Akt" on birth certificate dated 1851.

Jerry has picture of Parish church where Charles was baptized. This area is solidly Catholic, but Charles became a Protestant in America. 48

Gone to His Rest.
Charles Colling, Born April 6, 1852, died at Indianola, Nebraska, June 20, 1900, tells the tale of 48 yeas, and all that was mortal of Charlie Colling, was laid to rest in mother earth last Sunday morning, there to lie until the son of Righteousness shall send forth his angels to collect the ransomed dead. All our reader know of the great affliction which finally terminated in death, through which Charley passed. Some 9 months ago he was stricken with what the physicians pronounced appendicitis, and was taken to Lincoln where an operation was performed on him.
Getting no better, another and still another, and no better results coming from them, the surgeons said there would be no use to perform another. Days lengthened into weeks, weeks into months, and still he lay patiently suffering a hundred deaths, until last Friday evening, death came to his relief. We believe if ever any one was ready for the summons, Charlie Colling was that one. One of the most upright men, we ever met. Honest with himself, his fellowman and his God. Scrupulously conscientious in all his dealings, his word as good as his bond. The funeral services were held at the Congregational Church last Sunday, at 11 A. M., Rev. Calhoun preaching the funeral sermon. The largest concourse of people that have attended a funeral in many years in this city attended this one, for everybody was Charlie's friend. A wife and a large family of children mourn the loss and have the sincere sympathy of the whole community. Charlie was a member in good standing of the Ancient Order of United Workman, who attended the funeral in a body.

To all the kind friends and neighbors who so kindly rendered us their aid and assistance during the sickness and death of our husband and father, we return our most sincere thanks.
